The size and shape of the fistula, the most common way to establish access for haemodialysis, varies from patient to patient. Some patients are very self-conscious about their fistula. If it is a problem for you, talk to the nurses at the renal unit. They will help you choose styles of clothing to conceal the fistula and ensure that the blood flow is protected.

Haemodialysis patients who have a vascular access catheter may have body image problems. Some patients find it difficult to come to terms with having a permanent catheter. They worry that the catheter may affect sexual activity and their relationship with their partner. Again, ask your renal nurse for help.

Some PD patients do not like the way PD affects their appearance. The abdomen tends to get stretched by PD, giving it a rounded appearance. Keeping fit and performing exercises to strengthen the abdominal muscles will help.

The PD catheter can also cause body image problems in some people who find it difficult to accept the tube coming out of their body. They may also worry that the catheter may affect their sexual activity and their relationship with their partner.

Even if you are having trouble feeling sexy you can still show your feelings by hugging kissing and holding each other the most important thing is for you and your partner to be open and honest with each other. Together you can learn each others needs and make adjustments.

"I like to spend a lot of quiet time with my fiancé. We have been together a very long time… We're very much in love. He has helped me get through this emotionally, mentally, he gives me a lot of strength. When you are intimate, you have certain situations when you need to adjust your catheter, you need to tape your catheter and make sure it is secure." - Patient quote from Maggy
