Tips to restrict potassium intake

  • Vegetables. All fruit and vegetables contain some potassium. To reduce the amount of potassium in vegetables, boil them in a large pot with plenty of water and drain. Do not use this water to make gravy, soup, or casseroles. Rather than steaming vegetables, use a pressure cooker or microwave, or stir-fry them. Potatoes are high in potassium. Before roasting or making French fries, boil them for 10 minutes, then drain and discard the liquid.
  • Fruit. Tinned fruit is lower in potassium than fresh fruit. Always drain the fruit before eating.
  • Rice and pasta are much lower in potassium than potatoes. Eat rice or pasta with high-potassium dishes such as curry or bolognaise.
  • Milk is high in potassium. You may be asked to limit the amount you have each day. Check with your renal unit. If you are asked to restrict your milk intake, remember that milk is used in puddings, drinks, sauces, and yogurt.
