Body image
The size and shape of the hemodialysis access can vary from patient to patient. Some patients are very self-conscious about their fistula. If it is a problem for you, talk to other patients or your healthcare team. They may help you choose styles of clothing to conceal the access and ensure that the blood flow is protected.
The PD catheter can also cause body image problems in some people who find it difficult to accept the tube coming out of their body. They may also worry that the catheter may affect their sexual activity and their relationship with their partner.
Even if you are having trouble feeling sexy you can still show your feelings by hugging kissing and holding each other. The most important thing is that you and your partner are open and honest with each other. Together you can learn each others needs and make adjustments.
