Patients on hemodialysis

Find a hemodialysis center
You will need to be within easy reach of a hemodialysis (HD) unit that can accommodate you. There are plenty of exotic locations with hemodialysis centers and even special cruises designed for dialysis patients.

Keep your dialysis center advised of any research you are doing into HD units. The staff may give you certain criteria, such as an infection-control policy, that the unit at your vacation destination must satisfy.

The staff can help you book places in other dialysis centers at home and abroad.

Arrange transportation to the hemodialysis center
Make arrangements for travel to and from the HD unit at your destination. The staff at the unit may be able to help you with this, or your hotel may be able to arrange a taxi for you. Allow plenty of time for delays, especially during rush hour.

Differences in treatment
There may be slight differences in equipment and procedures between the dialysis center you visit and your home unit. Discuss what these might be with your home unit in advance so you're not caught off guard.

Costs
Make sure you are aware of any costs involved for your dialysis while on vacation.
