Tests

As your kidney function decreases, your doctor will order regular blood tests to monitor your overall health. Further special tests will be required if you are on dialysis, or if you have a kidney transplant. The table below lists the blood tests most commonly used, the reason for the tests, and the normal and target range of results for each test.

You can print this table, and enter the results of your blood tests. Ask your doctor to verify whether the targets given are realistic for you. If any of your results do not seem to be on target, ask your renal nurse or doctor for advice.

Print the table and enter the results of your blood tests. You should discuss your individual results with your doctor.

"Patients often feel bewildered by the number and complexity of blood results. I find that most patients take a real interest and many become experts after a while." - Helen, Renal Nurse
